Colorless fuming liquid made of hydrogen fluoride in water with a strong, irritating odor. Readily dissolves in water to form colorless hydrofluoric acid solutions that are a precursor to almost all fluorine compounds, including pharmaceuticals such as Prozac. It is used as a chemical reagent in several industrial processes such as oil refineries. Also used as an etchant, cleaning agent, and reagent to dissolve oxides and silicates.
